Short Biography

Wu Wenjun (吴文俊, May 23, 1939 - ). Born in Shanghai to an affluent middle-class family, Wu Wenjun started learning the piano at age six with Chinese pianist, Ms. Tu Yuexian (屠月仙). At age nine, Wu Wenjun and her elder sister Wu Wencai (吴文彩) started learning from pianist Gerard Pincus, a Jewish refugee from Berlin. In January 1953, their father died of a heart attack as he was serving jail time for a wrongful conviction of attempted subversion. Pincus continued to teach the Wu sisters for free, until his own death in the summer of that year. In high school, Wu Wenjun was admitted to the Shanghai Amateur Youth Arts Group, where she got the opportunity to study piano with Professor Quan Genghgua (全赓华) of the Shanghai Conservatory. In 1957, Wu Wenjun was admitted by both the Fudan University and the Shanghai Conservatory. She chose the latter.

 

In 1962, upon graduation, Wu Wenjun was assigned the position of piano accompanist at the Central Philharmonic Society in Beijing. During her over three-decade work there, she accompanied several famous instrumental soloists and singers. She was also a member of the chamber group of the Central Philharmonic Society and toured China extensively.
